Vocabulary Lesson: Ristra


Ristra -
n.
A string on which foodstuffs, such as chilies, onions, or garlic, are threaded or tied for storage.

This is common sight in New Mexico but rare in Ohio.

Very nice! I never knew what that was called - I just thought it was a string o' chiles.

How long does it last?

I suppose it lasts until you eat all of the chiles.

I don't even have a ristra right now. I usually throw them out when they get dusty and spidery. Do you actually use yours by grinding the peppers into chili powder or is it pure decoration? It so reminds me of home.
