Vocabulary Lesson: Ristra

Ristra -
A string on which foodstuffs, such as chilies, onions, or garlic, are threaded or tied for storage.

This is common sight in New Mexico but rare in Ohio.

My parents brought me this lovely one for Christmas.

"What a beautiful ristra you have hanging." I used it in a sentence.

Very nice! I never knew what that was called - I just thought it was a string o' chiles.

How long does it last?

Marie Hatch Chambers said...

I suppose it lasts until you eat all of the chiles.

Ristra will be my word of the day! Thanks for teaching me something new.

I don't even have a ristra right now. I usually throw them out when they get dusty and spidery. Do you actually use yours by grinding the peppers into chili powder or is it pure decoration? It so reminds me of home.
